Hi Everyone, it’s November!

Do you know how many pounds of candy Americans buy for Halloween?

A whopping 745 million pounds. That’s the weight of around 34 billion bats 🦇 or 62 million jack-o-lanterns 🎃.

I’m pretty sure I ate around 20 million pounds of those 745. I ate so many sour patch kids this year.

November is here, which means we can now start the countdown to all the holidays. We have:

  • 22 days until Thanksgiving 🦃

  • 50 days until Christmas 🎄

  • 57 days until the New Year

Let’s get into it.

Here are some things that happened around us, in 60 seconds or less:

Business & Development

  • 🏡 Chino accepting Planning Commission applications through Nov. 14 —three 4-year regular positions (through Jan. 2030) and one vacancy (through Jan. 2028). Commissioners review development applications and advise City Council on planning and land use. Must be Chino resident. Apply here.

  • 📦 City Council denied environmental appeal against Gateway Terminal—a shipping container-themed restaurant and warehouse project at Schaefer and Oaks. City consultants found no new environmental impacts despite claims about truck noise and habitat loss.

  • 🏛️ City Council voted against reducing Planning Commission from 7 to 5 seats, but sparked debate about commissioner training. Mayor Ulloa said some applicants have never attended a meeting and don't understand their role, while staff is developing new training program with speakers on topics like economic development.

  • 🏛️ Senator Susan Rubio honored by Chino City Council for SB 536, which allows the city to negotiate purchasing an unused state facility for community development. Rubio thanked Mayor Ulloa and residents for the partnership in creating opportunities for the region.

  • What’s SB 536? SB 536 allows Chino to negotiate purchasing the 130-acre former Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility (closed in 2010) for redevelopment into affordable housing, recreation, education, and commercial uses. City has until December 2028 to complete the purchase, though rezoning for residential would require a public vote under Measure M.

Home insurance rates up by 76% in some states

Over the last 6 years, home insurance rates have increased by up to 76% in some states. Between inflation, costlier repairs, and extreme weather, premiums are climbing fast – but that doesn’t mean you have to overpay. Many homeowners are saving hundreds a year by switching providers. Check out Money’s home insurance tool to compare companies and see if you can save.

That’s it for this week! If you enjoyed this issue, send to someone who is still finding glitter from last Halloween.
