The Digest: Battery Storage Facility Voted Down
Aypa Power, one of the country's largest energy storage developers, proposed the city's first battery energy storage facility—a 400-megawatt Dirac project on a 13.89-acre site connecting to the Southern California Edison substation on Benson Avenue. The site sits roughly 900 feet from Ayala Park, the city's premier recreation amenity, and close to residential neighborhoods. The facility would use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in shipping-container-style units to store energy when supply is high and release it back to the grid during demand spikes. Residents raised safety concerns about fire risk and heat exposure so close to the park, with one asking, "How will that be affected by the heat? Is that something that can catch on fire?" Aypa pointed to the Moss Landing battery fire in January 2025—which forced nearly 1,500 residents to evacuate—as a cautionary example, but argued LFP batteries are more stable and that outdoor installation would let first responders access the site from any direction. Despite those assurances, the Chino Planning Commission voted down the project Wednesday, July 15, leaving its future in serious doubt.

If you've been looking for a new Japanese BBQ spot to try, Holy Cow Japanese BBQ in Chino Hills has been getting plenty of positive feedback from local diners.
The restaurant offers three all-you-can-eat menu tiers featuring premium wagyu, seafood, sushi, hand rolls, and other specialties. Reviews consistently highlight the quality of the meats, with many also mentioning the attentive service and recently renovated space.
They also serve Japanese beer and sake, and if you think you'll be back, their membership is worth knowing about. For $25 a year, members receive $10 off every visit and $40 off on their birthday. Signing up during your first visit also applies the discount that same day.
