It’s been a smokey few weeks.

Following the Grand Ave., fire last week, we had two more reports of fires this week. I’m sure you’ve seen it all over the news, and you can read our brief below in The Digest.

The Bain Fire is particularly devastating. Our thoughts are with all families that have been impacted, and especially those who have been injured. We will keep updating as news comes out.

In this issue, we have a fun car detail giveaway for our readers (you can send in multiple entries), and some other community updates.

Let’s get into it.

⚾ Buzzers Break It Open Late in 12–4 Win

The Ontario Tower Buzzers turned Tuesday night’s game into a much bigger win than it looked like it was going to be for most of the evening. Ontario stayed locked in a close matchup with the Inland Empire 66ers through several innings before completely pulling away late for a 12–4 finish.

Easton Shelton gave the Buzzers a major spark in the sixth with a two-run homer that shifted the momentum back toward Ontario, while Mairo Martinus quietly put together one of the biggest offensive nights on the roster, finishing 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Brendan Tunink also came through with multiple clutch RBI hits as the offense kept building pressure inning by inning.

The game finally broke wide open during an explosive 8-run ninth inning that turned a tight game into a runaway win almost instantly. Meanwhile, Hermann delivered a strong performance on the mound with 11 strikeouts across 5.2 innings, helping keep the Buzzers within reach long enough for the offense to fully wake up.

If you’ve been wanting a local summer activity that actually feels worth leaving the house for, a Tower Buzzers game might be a good one to keep on your radar. Tickets are available below, and the team’s upcoming Family Picnic Night on July 10 is already shaping up to be one of our bigger community nights of the season. More details coming soon.

The Digest

The Chino Valley faced three wildfires in one week, starting with last Wednesday's Grand Fire—a 30-acre blaze sparked by a Tesla rollover crash on Grand Avenue in Chino Hills that prompted evacuations for 650 homes before being contained in 2½ hours. Then on Tuesday, May 19, the region was hit with two simultaneous fires: the Willow Fire ignited near Soquel Canyon Parkway and Slate Drive in Chino Hills, reaching 11 acres before forward spread was stopped, triggering evacuation warnings for El Dorado Court, Inverness Court, and Willow Bend Court that were lifted by 12:45 p.m. The fire was ultimately contained at just 2.6 acres. Meanwhile, the Bain Fire erupted in Jurupa Valley's Santa Ana River bottom near Limonite Avenue and Bain Street at 11:22 a.m., exploding to 1,456 acres with only 25% containment as of Wednesday afternoon. Four civilians were injured—three with smoke inhalation, one with traumatic injuries—and evacuation orders were issued for over 24,000 residents. Cal Fire noted dried bamboo collapsed in the riverbed burning out of control, with several vacant structures damaged. The fires come as Southern California enters peak wildfire season, with Chino Hills Mayor Brian Johsz urging residents to harden their homes and prepare evacuation plans. Chino Hills benefits from the SOLAR mutual aid team (San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside) that trains every May in Tonner Canyon specifically for scenarios like this.

🍲 Pot On Fire Has Entered The Rotation

image: yelp

Pot On Fire feels like one of those places people randomly end up at because the wait somewhere else was too long, then realize it’s actually quite good. Located in Chino, the restaurant serves individual hot pots, so everyone gets their own broth and ingredients. This makes the whole experience feel much more relaxed and easy, especially if you’re going with a group and everyone wants something different.

Many people seem to love the Beef Sukiyaki and Pumpkin Hot Pot, mainly because the broths are rich and comforting without feeling too heavy. Reviews also mention how quickly the food is served after ordering, and the QR code ordering system makes everything quite simple. Additionally, there’s a large parking lot, which honestly already feels like a win in this area.

The overall vibe is casual and low-pressure in the best way: the service is friendly, the portions are generous, and there's none of the packed, hectic feeling you usually get at more popular hot pot spots nearby. It’s not trying too hard to be trendy, and that’s probably part of why people keep coming back.
