Happy Wednesday Chino Valley,

We're three weeks into January, which means Dry January folks are either feeling smugly hydrated or quietly googling 'does kombucha count.'

the vibes right now

Either way, no judgment here. We've got a packed week ahead—new businesses, events, and a few things you'll actually want to leave the house for.

Let’s get into it.

Here are some things that happened around us, in 60 seconds or more.

Business & Development

  • 🅿️ Chino approved $163,243 design contract to expand Monte Vista Park parking lot into adjacent vacant parcel. Design expected by fall, using Community Development Block Grant funds.

  • 🏬 Walmart Supercenter now open in Eastvale. Grand Opening drew lots of locals to check out the rumored cheap gas and other fun prizes.

  • 🏥 Pomona Valley Hospital announced its plans for 100+ layoffs after facing budget shortfalls in the millions.

  • Chino Planning Commission Meeting cancelled today, next meeting Feb 18th.

Community

  • 👑 Chino resident Andrea Roberts, owner of Talent Factory Dance Studio, crowned Ms. America at Dec. 28 pageant in Mission Viejo. Invited to D.C., Barcelona, Rome, and America's Got Talent audition.

  • ⚖️ U.S. Supreme Court ordered California to respond by Jan. 21 to Thomas More Society's emergency application in Mirabelli v. Bonta parental notification case. Justice Elena Kagan issued order Tuesday.

  • 🐮 Want to see some cows in green pastures? Head over to Eucalyptus/McCoy Loop in Chino Hills. City urges hikers to stay on trails and respect private property.

  • 🐺 Coyote activity increasing in Chino and Chino Hills due to breeding season. Securing garbage, keep pets on six-foot leash, and remove outdoor pet food.

The Bulletin

  • 🙋 Oparc, a local non-profit, is hiring Medical Support Professionals and Behavior Support Professionals. Hourly rates both $22+. Visit oparc.org for more info.

  • 👮 Chino Police Department accepting applications for Community Relations Internship Program. Unpaid position for college students 18+ interested in law enforcement and community engagement. Requires flexible hours, oral interview, and background check. Contact [email protected].

  • 💼 Check out The #1 Chino Valley & Inland Empire Job Board. We’re working on advanced categorization of our jobs. We added 645 new jobs this week.

We’re going through Chino’s General Plan together so we know where our town came from, and how it’s changing (we love hearing new places open!). This week: Making Downtown Happen.

The plan focuses on D Street and Seventh Street between Sixth and Central - this becomes the walkable core. Historic buildings get preserved with heritage-themed design for new construction. The city owns major land downtown, so it can catalyze change through public-private partnerships.

The three-part strategy: Partner with developers to curate shops and restaurants. Lease some city land for housing to build a customer base. Use that lease revenue to fund a new theater and ongoing events. But first, voters need to approve the land use changes through a Measure M vote. Incentives for small local businesses include potentially eliminating parking requirements for tiny spaces when structured parking exists nearby.

There’s a lot that needs to happen for this to come true, but the plans point to a promising direction.

Next time: what happens to our aging strip malls.
