Happy Wednesday.

The days being so short is so bad for my seasonal depression. I leave for work before the sun rises, stay in a windowless office all day, then come home in the dark. I feel grouchy a lot and am super tired (my commute starts at 4:30 am).

They said getting a sun lamp is really good for that. But it was way too expensive, so I bought some discounted fairy lights from Michael’s and put them in my office.

Instant dopamine.

actual footage of me at work

Btw, Michael’s had all these cute Christmas lights on sale for 40% off. Wreath supplies, ribbons, and decor were heavily discounted too. I got fake berry branches for like $1 each. This isn’t sponsored, just important info for decor procrastinators like me.

Only two weeks left till Christmas 🎄.

Let’s get into it.

Here are some things that happened around us.

  • 🛣Chino approved $7M design contract for $140M Pine Avenue extension to 71 Freeway, but Chino Hills pulled its $4.2M commitment—calling it "a drop in the bucket" and suggesting Jurupa and Eastvale "pony up" instead. Chino Hills Councilman Art Bennett said he'd "rather retain this money for projects that would benefit our residents than throw it into a big hole," despite one-third of the Pine extension running through Chino Hills itself. Chino Mayor Eunice Ulloa responded, urging Chino Hills to "put up some money" since the majority of the project is in their community. Chino's Public Works Director also countered that the extension would provide a critical wildfire evacuation route for Chino Hills. Project costs ballooned from $50M to $140M after it was determined that the deteriorated Pine portion (see image above) needed to switch from a graded roadway to bridge design. Chino now seeking federal grants to cover 80% of costs.

  • 🚁 Chino Hills approved heli-hydrant fire protection system in Butterfield near Estoril Street, completing by end of 2026. The 10,000-gallon rapid-fill tank will allow CalFire helicopters to quickly refill during wildfires. Estimated cost $400,000.

  • ⚖️ Chino joining Redondo Beach's petition to California Supreme Court on housing overlay ruling. Second District Court of Appeal decision could invalidate overlay zoning strategies used by 250+ California cities for state housing mandates.

  • 🎖️ Brian Johsz selected as Chino Hills Mayor, term effective Dec. 1. Vice Mayor Ray Marquez. Johsz's priorities include public safety, America's 250th birthday celebrations in 2026, exploring sister city program, and addressing landscape/lighting district funding challenges.
