I have a teaser for you today.

If you’ve been following our newsletter or our socials, we know we’ve been brewing our next event. I’ve polled several times, talked to a few individuals, and got a fun idea coming. We’ll announce it soon in the next few weeks, but we just locked in a venue! Save the date: May 30th, Saturday morning. It will be lots of sun, new friends, and hopefully this will be another one for the books.

consider this your official invite to a sunny hangout

In this issue, we present to you our newest sponsor in the roster, the news around the block, and weekend events for you & your family to keep busy.

Let's get into it.

We’ve Got a New Buzz in Town 🐝

We’ve been holding this one for awhile, but it’s now official: The Ontario Tower Buzzers have officially joined us as our local sponsor!

They’re the Dodgers’ new Single-A team, playing at the brand new ONT Field. I personally love minor league games because I find the whole thing to be more family-friendly (less chaotic logistics, more community feel), and I am thrilled that we are partnering with them just in our backyard.

Every other week, we’ll be bringing you news from the field, with fun community things that the Team is leading! If you are baseball fan and want to help curate this content, shoot me an email by replying! 🧢

All that to say… there’s a lot of energy building around them right now, and if you’ve been needing an excuse to actually leave your house and do something local… this might be it. Especially since they’ve got a Shawn Green signing event next Tuesday, which feels like a pretty solid place to start.

Here are some things that happened around us, in 60 seconds or less.

Business & Development

  • 🚗 Former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser announced as new owner of M.K. Smith Chevrolet at State of the City Address. Orel Hershiser Chevrolet grand opening Thursday, May 28 at 12845 Central Ave.

  • ⛪ Yireh Church proposes moving into former Heights Chino Hills Christian Preschool at 2092 Chino Hills Parkway. Planning Commission hearing Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m.

  • 🛣️ Caltrans proposing to widen S-curve on Carbon Canyon Road between Carriage Hills Lane and Azurite Drive, construction slated summer 2028. Public comment deadline May 10 at [email protected].

Community

  • 🐾Priceless Pets Ranch forced to end monthly farmer's market on English Ranch Road after crowds exceeded 100-person permit limit. City cited traffic congestion and pedestrian safety concerns. This one we’re pretty sad about.

  • 💳 Skimming activity reported at Village Liquor on Riverside Drive and Pipeline Avenue. Fraudulent charges appearing on debit cards after purchases.

  • 🚁 Chino PD helicopter searched near Preserve Stater Bros Tuesday for missing person. Individual located safely.

  • 🚔 Chino City Council approved continued use of military equipment including armored vehicles, grenades, projectile launchers under AB 481 annual review. Community meeting March 27 had six attendees.

The Bulletin

  • 🧢The Chino Chew is looking for baseball fanatics to help us curate & fact check the Ontario Tower Buzzers’ up-to-date news. If you can rattle off the history of the Dodgers, love baseball cards, can tell me why someone should’ve been MVP in 2002 according to the stats, or any other nerdy thing about baseball, you’re my person. This is a volunteer position for now, but if we have baseball-related opportunities, you will get first dibs. Reply to this email to join us.

🍨Big Scoops, Fresh Flavors at Bruster’s Real Ice Cream

The weather isn’t scorching hot yet, but ice cream is always a good idea. Coming from parts of town closer to LA, I definitely hit pangs of missing my occasional Salt & Straw or Handel’s Ice Cream. My favorite is the “Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper” from Salt & Straw — because my husband hates it and I get to have it by myself without sharing. But I digress.

To fill our recent craving, we went to Bruster’s Real Ice Cream in Chino. Because of my favorite flavor, I have high standards for anything strawberry in ice cream. I tasted the strawberry matcha, and to my surprise, the flavor didn’t feel too artificial, and just like the old timey strawberry milks I used to get as a kid with fresh matcha mixed in. The portions were generous, and my baby even got a free baby cone (there’s a height limit).

They’ve got some other fun flavors too, like horchata and ube. Friendly staff, and they have a BYOB (bring your own banana 🍌 ) Banana Split night on Thursdays! Would absolutely go back… and probably tell myself “this time I’ll get a small” just to ignore that completely.

Chino Valley: Down Payment Help Still Out There

There was the California Dream For All program for first-time homeowners that recently blew up, that so many of us were unfortunately not eligible for.

First-time homeownership feels like a tough mountain to climb especially for us in California, but there are still lots of year-round down payment assistance programs available including grants (money you don’t pay back!), forgivable loans, and other options that can help cover both your down payment and closing costs.

If the Dream For All program made you feel like you “just missed it,” don’t count yourself out yet. There are still options floating around that could actually make a difference — you just need someone who knows where to look.

Dillon specializes in just that. He’ll go over your personal finances with you, pool in his resources to find your best deal and programs out there, and work with you so that you can smoothly and confidently finance your next home, even in this tough market. For actual listings, you can also work with our RE partner Taylor Winkler, our local agent who can help you buy or sell. Bring in great players into your real estate process who know the local market — it’s important for such big transactions!
